The Nowhere GreenTeam – greening Nowhere and beyond!

These pages are meant to collect infos on how to make Nowhere greener.

SUGGESTED TEAM BREAKDOWNS

Power Team – wind and sun traded off against fossil fuels. Also – the feasibility and desirability of using bio-diesel generators. In charge of figuring out how much of our power needs can be converted to more carbon friendly means and in what time scale. THIS TEAM JUMPED INTO ACTION IN AUG 2008 due to acute symptoms caused by BM abstinence.

Bicycle Power Team – would anyone like to take this on as it's own project? A few people suggested it and it could be fun and possibly even useful. Might just power art or music projects but is it feasible for more? – Maybe it makes sense to include this into the PowerTeam

Local Liaison Team – tasked with looking into finding a school or organisation in the Castejon region who might want to use some of the resources we come up with year round. This will help the multiple aims of a) Nowhere benefitting the local community in which it takes place b) possibly enable a local school or body to have solar power year round, on the condition that they lend Nowhere their solar facilities c) reduce carbon footprint in transporting heavy duty solar panels or wind turbines to and from site for Nowhere
European Union Funding Team – will work closely with the local liaison team in particular to see whether these intitiatives quailfy us for any EU grants. Surely a multi nation, eco friendly, help the community action like this qualifies for a grant somewhere ? It's what the EU is all about isn't it?

Water Team- looking into solutions for reducing the number of plastic bottles being used on site – Olivier has already taken a phenomenal lead in this and come up with a scheme for grey water which could help Werkhaus and potentially Camps / Pueblos? too.

Motivating participants to think greener – give them information on the impact our journeys have and get us to think about ways of reducing that impact. Perhaps tie into this Stefan's suggestion that indviduals start to think about getting personal solar power kits like the one Stefan recommends in the document and which was enough to power personal electrical goods Perhaps also encouraging people to think about the sustainability side of the their gifts and toys (see Dominic's points).

Theme camp/Pueblo (as I prefer to call them) Liaison – now this is where it gets tricky -one of the big discussions that will need to be had is how far this is and remains solely a Norg thing or whether it is extended to Pueblos/ Theme Camps. Some Green Team people are already tied to Theme Camps which is helpful so they can feed back to their camps, but a Green Pueblo / Camp? liaison person could make sure we are communicating with all Pueblos to assess their level of interest. For example, if we wanted to roll out a grey water scheme to all camps, would and could they be prepared to pay or do some of the work to make it happen. Similary, would theme camps like to chip into buying solar panels (this is where this job crosses over with Power Team – geddit? )

Green Language Lead – I am very conscious all this is in English and everyone who responded to my initial call out speaks excellent English. It would be good if we could translate at least some of our materials so that those who aren't so fluent but may have important and relevant feedback and contacts can be kept informed and part of the process. Karla Richards, our Goddess of Communications may be able to help with this somewhat but we should probably have our own lead on this rather than just add to what she already has to do.

SO – if you like the sound of any of these teams, please step up.

SUGGESTED AGENDA FOR GREEN TEAM MEETING 6/12/08 – PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ADD

Funding from ? (EU?)
– Tech that makes sense (Water, Power, Transportation,...)
– Institution(s) to support (Year round solar, Carbon Offsetting, ...)
– Contacts with info, – to play with, ... (other festivals, rentals in Spain, eco projects,...)
– Plans for Nowhere 2009 + the future
– Action Points, Time Line
– Who / What / When
– potable water organisation? I guess we need someone speaking Spanish to get any further?
– shower water, what shall we do
– carbon footprint and off-set: should we give examples to participants on the impact etc

ALSO FOR INTEREST, THIS IS
Chris Element’s Sustainability Questionnaire for Boom Organisers – if you know of
other organisations who might be able to give us information, you can perhaps use some of these questions

1) Can you/ your organisation (http://www.ecocentro.org/) help us to
make the Nowhere event more sustainable, even if our budget is very
limited, if so, how ?

2) Would you know of any other organisations, people etc specialized in
making events/festivals like ours more sustainable, even if our budget
is very limited ?

3) General advice on how to make the Nowhere event more sustainable in
an efficient way (without changing the spirit of the event too much),
priorities, does and don't s ?

4) How would you organize/structure a green/eco/sustainability team for
an event like Nowhere, keeping future scalability in mind ?

5) Can you provide contact details (postal, email, web, ...) to get
inexpensive alternative/sustainable energy technology, especialy solar
(and wind) ?

6) Have any ecological footprint analysis been undertaken, in relation
to Boom 2008, if so, what did it include, how has it been conducted, and
what are the results ?

7) What are your conclusion from your Boom 2008 sustainability
engagement/ experience. What worked, what failed, pitfalls, unforseeable
problems/ surprises, good and bad ?

8) Any other information you would like to provide, things youd like to
tell us, advice, information sources we could need, use ?

9) Any questions/ information you would like/ need to ask/ get from us ?
